Abstract:
In this paper we propose a new fast and smooth handoff scheme called L-MIFA (Low latency Mobile IP Fast Authentication protocol) and present a simple analytical performance model to compare this protocol with the pre-registration method (low latency handoff method in Mobile IP). Our performance study shows that L-MIFA outperforms the pre-registration method. L-MIFA minimizes the handoff latency and the packet loss. This is achieved by employing a fast authentication procedure and a fast retransmission of messages when dropping happens. Additionally L-MIFA does not depend on a hierarchical network architecture as is typically the case with the preregistration method.
