Abstract:
The DC power supply systems of telecom applications for broad-band and internet access have increasing energy demands. However, in many cases the available space for the installation is already used to its maximum. A lithium ion battery can be the solution because of the higher energy density of about 150Wh/kg and 380Wh/l, good discharging performance and an operating range from -30deg C to 60deg C. The paper presents a conceptual battery with GAIA lithium ion cells for these new telecom demands. For safety and operating life reasons a battery management system is applied to this battery. Production, characterization and performance in comparison to other electrochemical systems are discussed.
