Abstract:
QoS provisioning in wireless ad hoc networks is difficult due to issues like lossy wireless media, need for suitable medium access protocols to handle contention on shared media and route determination across several wireless nodes. Mobility of nodes in a Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) further complicates this task. The problem gets compounded if one seeks an efficient set of routing and medium access scheme to provision QoS in MANETs suitable for any application. In this article, we highlight an approach to QoS provisioning in MANETs, from an application perspective. We derive the requirements and specifications of the solution from the application and then designed the solution. The application we selected, uses Internet connected MANETs as an alternative to WLANs and cellular networks. We present the performance of the solution so developed.
