Abstract:
Continuous and simultaneous monitoring of glucose and lactate in the interstitial fluid of subcutaneous adipose tissue has been realized through the combination of microdialysis with a “bioanalytical microsystem”. It provides an excellent insight into tissue metabolism, which is of interest for metabolism research and for glucose monitoring of diabetes patients. The application of a small microdialysis catheter enables a minimal invasive sampling of the probe without anesthesia. Two different monitoring systems with microdialysis sample collection are presented. With the first system, a commercially available microdialysis probe connected to a bioanalytical system we monitored 8 male volunteers for 6 hours. The correlation of the sensor signals with the CMA 600 analyzer results of all 8 experiments gave an r2= 0.834. We also found a correlation of the analyte recovery with the BMI of the volunteers. In order to overcome the limitations of commercially available microdialysis systems we used planar micro-technologies to realize a miniaturized device comprising connection fluidics integrated to a biosensor array flow cell.
