Abstract:
Recent SAR instruments e.g. ASAR/ENVISAT or the upcoming TerraSAR-X use active phased array antennas with electronic beam steering capability for wide swath coverage. Although such instruments provide high flexibility and performance, the need for a low cost SAR can be identified for various mission cases already. A way to reduce cost is the use of a multi-feed/ reflector hybrid approach. The ‘Multi-Pencil-Beam’-Concept based on a feed-cluster system has been elaborated and investigated in a former ESA study [Ref.1]. Recently, EADS Astrium GmbH and Saab Ericsson Space have been awarded by ESA to continue the study including the bread-boarding of such a feed-cluster.
