              Abstract:
The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) space component relies on existing and planned space assets by Member states, EUMETSAT and ESA, as well as new complementary developments by ESA. The new developments are implemented in terms of 5 families of satellites called Sentinels. This paper describes the SENTINEL-1 mission, an imaging SAR mission at C-band. It provides an overview of the mission requirements, how they were derived and some insight into the preliminary technical concept for the satellite.
