Abstract:
This paper compares VHF/UHF airborne SAR measurements of coniferous forests to investigate the relationship between backscatter strength and stem volume over a relatively flat forested area in southern Sweden. Measurements made in the band 20-90 MHz with CARABAS have been compared to measurements between 232-434 MHz using LORA. The backscatter in both frequency ranges is well correlated with stem volume at stand level (R2 value of 0.76 and 0.62 for CARABAS and LORA respectively). While LORA has slightly lower correlation with stem volume than CARABAS, the LORA data is at present uncalibrated which may be partly responsible for the poorer results obtained from this system.
