Abstract:
The problem of maintenance is crucial in all technical systems. Indeed, though much ingenuity, experience and effort are placed in the design and construction of such systems, their faultless functioning during their operation is not guaranteed without proper maintenance. This problem is more serious in some categories of technical systems. Among them are the mobile communication systems especially their radio access network and in particular the Base Transceiver Station sites (BTS sites). Maintenance has many facets i.e. recognition of a malfunction within a short time, determination of the faulty parts, availability of spare parts needed to repair malfunctions, etc. Another facet of maintenance is the gathering of proper data, right after the repair of a malfunction in the system, which could be used for extracting statistical data regarding the actual functioning of the system. Such statistical data are useful, for example they can be utilized for prognosis of future malfunctions, for inventory control and for strategic planning. A prototype software system for gathering on-site maintenance data from BTS sites, right after the repair of a malfunction in such sites, using a mobile phone and the mobile web, is presented in this paper.
