This paper presents the use of two EAs namely Differential Evolution (DE) and Breeder Genetic Algorithm (BGA) to simultaneously tune Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) in a Two area Multi-machine system. The proposed approach is based on the eigenvalue analysis whereby the system lowest damping ratio is maximized using DE and BGA to determine the robust optimal setting of PSS parameters. A comparative analysis is carried out to determine which algorithm achieves better results. The effectiveness of DE-PSS and BGA-PSS to damp the low frequency oscillations is tested for various operating conditions. In most cases, the resulting DE-PSS performs better than BGA-PSS. The results are assessed by the convergence rate of the two algorithms, the modal analysis of the system which are validated by simulations of the system's response in different contingencies.
