Abstract:
Efficiency is known as the main lever for cost saving in UPS systems. Based on semiconductor power loss measurements and subsequent calculations, the losses and efficiency for a typical application are compared for Si-IGBT and SiC solutions using various topologies. The resulting costs for investment and operation are estimated for a typical 250kVA UPS system with both chip technologies. A comparison clearly shows the savings for SiC-based solutions, despite the fact of higher power module costs.
