Abstract:
In this paper, we present a novel smoothing filter for estimating carrier phase error due to phase noise. The smoothing filter consists of forward and backward recursive filters, each of which is analogous to a conventional first-order phase-locked loop. Results of the mean square error performance are shown for this smoothing filter-based phase error estimation method when working in data-aided and decision-directed modes. We then apply the method as a code-aided phase error estimation technique in an iterative receiver framework. It is shown through simulations that the scheme has a very high phase noise tolerance.
