Abstract:
IGBTs have been the device of choice for power conversion equipment that operates over 300V DC bus over about 50-100w of power levels. IGBTs being minority carrier devices have significant stored charge and hence have a relatively large switching loss at turn off and turn on. In a given application condition (such as motor drives, UPSs, solar inverters etc.). This fact makes the power loss dependent on the current and the frequency of the device. In general the switching loss in the device can be traded off against the Vceon of the device and manufacturers optimize their devices to provide the lowest loss for a particular application that runs at a particular frequency. As the devices are nonlinear (with respect to the current) in their operating parameters (Vceon, Eon, Eoff, Err) that cause the losses, it becomes time consuming for designers to read all this information off the datasheet and create a model that can be used to predict application performance. For this reason, It is also difficult for designers and purchasing people to compare devices from different manufacturers for parameters and in application. This problem is being solved today by a series of online tools (at ezigbt.com) that allow a large number of IGBTs to be evaluated and compared very quickly. This paper will introduce the tools available in 2 sections (Analyze, Compare) of the toolset along with typical outputs as screenshots of the site. The following is a set of output graphs that will be accompanied by brief descriptions.
