Abstract:
Efficiency is a key requirement for UPS systems, and multi-level technology is increasingly used to reduce the conversion losses. In this context, NPC topologies with split DC-link are particularly common. This paper addresses voltage balancing across the split DC-link capacitors by means of a dedicated circuit. It also introduces a novel operating mode of the NPC converter legs to take over the DC balancing function in case of a failure in the dedicated circuit. Operation is verified either through simulation or experimentally.
