Abstract:
In many applications (e.g. street lighting) LED drivers are required that deliver an almost constant current to the load. Based on the present trend towards miniaturization and higher power densities, resonant converters with inductive output filter represent a very attractive alternative to meet these demands. Due to their ability to reach zero voltage switching (ZVS) a very high efficiency can be obtained over the entire load and input voltage range. This paper deals with the design of a series resonant converter with inductive output filter (SRCi) based on a typical street lighting application of 130 W. Based on its exact mathematical description in the time domain, the SRCi is optimized and built. Special attention is paid towards the magnetic design of both inductive components as well as high converter efficiency.
