Abstract:
This article lays out an architecture that has the advantage of deploying paralleled super capacitor (alternatively called ultra-capacitor) unit cell arrays. This system provides efficient and rapid charging and inherently reconfigures as a boost stage for servicing the load. Moreover, there is no need to carry out any kind of charge balancing, making the system more robust against ageing. The reader of this article will understand that these schemes are chemistry agnostic and exhibit high power density, low weight and efficiency metrics that differentiate them from other charger systems. Being so compact, these novel charger/conditioner schemes can be easily built in situ with the energy storage assemblies themselves, simplifying arrangements for the conditioning of any type of battery, let alone the super capacitor bank.
