Abstract:
The performance demands on modern electric motors are steadily increasing. In addition to high expectations regarding efficiency, power-density and torque ripple, the user expects a low noise and vibration level. Safety considerations are also important when selecting the best motor technology for an application. In this paper the absolute and relative performance characteristics of six different types of electric motors are comprehensively analyzed: • AC-induction motors • PM-excited, brushless synchronous motors • PM-excited, brushless synchronous motors with embedded magnets • Switched reluctance motors • Synchronous reluctance motors • Wound-field synchronous motors This comparison considers noise and vibration in particular. In addition to a theoretical consideration using analytical methods also simulation techniques are presented. Finally recommendations have been developed, which can help design optimization with respect to noise and vibration, once the choice of motor technology has been finalized.
