Abstract:
Saturable inductors are employed in various power electronics applications. For instance, ref. [1] deals with the use of a stepped air-gap inductor in a Buck converter leading to increased efficiency. This paper demonstrates the analytical calculation of the flyback converter with a stepped air-gap transformer, which enables a first estimation of converter losses. Thus, the influence of a stepped air-gap transformer on converter efficiency can be examined. Measurements have confirmed that this innovative topology leads to a total loss reduction of up to 6.4%. Consequently, the efficiency can be increased noticeably in comparison to a conventional flyback converter.
