Abstract:
To cope with increasing electrical power demand in modern cars a 48 V board net is introduced by German car makers. This voltage level requires power semiconductors with higher voltage rating compared to the 12 V board net. The power demand for different applications is analyzed and the requirements for the power semiconductors like PowerMOSFET are extracted. Using a standard D2PAK package (TO-263 or TO-263-7) current technologies are analyzed in terms of power and current capability. The comparison of these data yields a maximum power for the 48 V board net using existing technologies and proposals for new devices to increase the power range.
