Heavy Duty Applications - A Challenge for Power Semiconductor Devices

Abstract:
Large mobile applications like buses used in public transportation have different demands towards power electronics than fixed industrial installations. Vibration is a major topic, accompanied by restrictive space targets. Industrial power semiconductors support the desired form factor and the power density targeted but improvement in mechanical and thermal properties is needed to achieve the lifetime required to support commercial vehicles. In public transportation, both worlds come together when electric buses and the necessary infrastructure for charging is considered as a combined system.
