Abstract:
One of the main functions of a DC-link capacitor in power converters is to stabilize the DC-link voltage and compensate the load-difference between the input source and the output. During the semiconductor’s switch-off, there is a voltage overshoot due to parasitic capacitance of the semiconductor, which is filtered by a snubber capacitor. A compact capacitive component with low parasitic values and high power density can act as DC-link and snubber simultaneously, if the converter design allows a positioning of the capacitor in the direct vicinity of the semiconductor. This saves parts in the BOM, space in the converter volume and as a result of that also cost. Yet, the miniaturization and the increase in power density yield to higher temperatures, which have to be borne also by the capacitor components.
