Abstract:
To study the strength enhancement effect of 3mol% Y2O3 doped ZrO2 (3YSZ) on Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics, various AlN/3YSZ mixtures in the range of 0 ~ 4 wt.% 3YSZ were prepared using a ball mill method, and sintered to almost full density at 1780deg C under nitrogen atmosphere. The microstructure, flexural strength, and thermal conductivity of the resulting ceramics were evaluated with respect to their compositions. The 3YSZ particles were dispersed and isolated in the AlN matrix, and the grain growth of AlN was suppressed by grain-boundary pinning effect. The flexural strength and thermal conductivity of the reinforced AlN with 2 wt% 3YSZ were 425 MPa and 130 W/m∙K, respectively. In sum, the addition of 3YSZ to the AlN ceramic matrix enhances the properties of the AlN ceramics, making it more suitable for the application in the DCB ceramic substrates.
