Abstract:
During the EU funded project “NETfficient” the low and medium voltage distribution grid of the North Sea island of Borkum will be upgraded by a substantial amount of renewable energy and several storage solutions. For the medium voltage storage a highly compact bidirectional 1 MW battery inverter was built and will be presented here. With an eye on the finely scalable power ratings for storage inverters, a modular configuration with eight 125 kVA units fitting into a single 19" rack was chosen. New technologies like SiC MOSFET modules, high current PCBs, modular iron powder chokes and cold plates resulted in compact plugin units with efficiencies up to 98.9 % despite the small size.
