Abstract:
The 3L-NPC converter topology is becoming increasingly attractive for applications like medium-voltage industrial AC-drives, wind energy conversion systems and grid-connected converters because of its better performance compared with the 2-level converter. In these converters, each power device is subjected to different mission profiles depending on the application and switching strategy. Hence the prediction of the operating junction-temperature, which can also be used for lifetime estimation, is not straightforward. This paper uses motor drive simulations as well as experimental results from a single phase 3L-NPC converter with different technologies (Si/SiC) to investigate the problem of electrothermal stress distribution in power modules.
