Abstract:
Electric vehicles (EV) and Hybrid Electric vehicles (HEV) expect to become the future of transportation. Many OEM are investing heavily in research and development (R&D). All the supply chain is working hardly on reducing cost and be able to offer a competitive, reliable and C02 clean solution. The interest in commercial EV and HEV is driven by efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce toxic emissions. It has also amplified after the recent scandal on C02 emissions. High Voltage and high current IGBTs will play a key role in these application. This paper introduce an innovative IGBT chip for traction applications. This new generation of intelligent IGBT embedded also temperature and current sensing functions. The new generation of intelligent IGBT use the latest ON Semiconductor IGBT and diode chip technology. This latest technology significantly reduces the conduction saturation voltage, the switching losses and the thermal resistance. In this paper, the electrical characteristics are presented as well as the intelligent features embedded in the IGBT Structure: high precise temperature and current sensor. Further best practices for interfacing these signals to control electronics will be presented.
