Air conditioning system are today to be one of the major electricity consuming appliances, leading the end-user to require higher energy efficiency class models and pushing the manufactures to focus on the energy efficiency improvement. Semiconductor industry plays a fundamental role to achieve this purpose, developing new and more efficient power transistors. STMicroelectronics has developed the newest Super-Junction (SJ) Power MOSFET technology in MDmesh(TM) DM2 with fast recovery diode for motor control application and, together with the well consolidated Trench Field Stop (TFS) IGBT technology, offers a double option to achieve the energy efficiency improvement target. A detailed comparison, in terms of electrical and thermal performance, between the two technologies, assembled in the Intelligent Power Module SLLIMM(TM) (Small Low-Loss Intelligent Molded Module), is provided in a motor drive application, targeting the power level up to 1.2kW.
