Abstract:
In this paper, a three-phase and a symmetrical nine-phase drive system for automotive application are presented. Both systems are designed to have a comparable system performance and are analyzed regarding their key components. Differences in machine parameters due to the varied number of phases are briefly discussed. A two-level, three-phase Intelligent PowerCore (IPC) is proposed as B6 inverter unit enabling scalable multiphase hardware architectures. Key parameters like footprint, total number and rating of key components and contacts are addressed. Furthermore, the potential of reducing the bulky and costly DC-link capacitor by using a multiphase topology is analyzed and simulated. Comparative analysis of capacitor volume required for three and nine-phase drive system was carried out. Potential of significant size reduction of DC-link capacitor is reported.
