Abstract:
Through the deeply explanation of the atmospheric phenomenon, we aim to model the lightning effect on SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) applications protected by a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor). Starting from IEC 61000-4-5 normative waveforms and specification, a new Electrical Design Aided (EDA) model will be provided, which base the analysis on computations carried out on the first and the third V/I quadrant representation instead of just using the first one. Simulation results are confirmed by bench analysis, cross check measurements and acquisitions. The implementation of the third quadrant behaviors in the simulation model, will provide more detailed information compared with using a single quadrant one, which lead to a simulation result much adherent to a real SMPS converter.
