Abstract:
The last three hundred years have seen the technology revolutions of industrial, technical and the emerging data revolution taking (and continuing to take) place. In particular, William Sturgeon in 1824 created the earliest form of the electromagnet. In parallel, many social changes took place, which in turn, saw radical changes in factory automation, which lead to the development of even more sophisticated electromagnetic actuators. This review presents some aspects of the historic developments of electromagnetic actuators and explores the emerging needs from the Megatrends and emerging technologies.
