Abstract:
The paper presents an overview of dielectric elastomer (DE) systems based on thin-film silicone materials. After a brief introduction to the DE operating principle, it covers basic aspects such as manufacturing and experimental characterization of the electro-/mechanical DE behavior. The design of efficient DE membrane actuator/sensor systems typically takes advantage of the integration of various biasing systems, e.g., linear and nonlinear springs or magnets. The necessary steps for a suitable choice are illustrated for the case of a pneumatic valve. The paper concludes with a performance validation, showing that the DE valve does not only achieve identical flow rate and reaction times as a corresponding solenoid-driven counterpart, but additionally enables proportional control and self-sensing properties.
