Abstract:
Magnetic shape memory alloy actuators offer great potential for a new generation of actuators. We discuss open questions regarding the development of magnetic shape memory (MSM) alloy actuators with a special focus on the dynamic limits. Vibrating sample magnetometry was used to measure magnetization curves for different orientations of the magnetic field. Depending on the direction of the applied field the switching field is gradual or immediate, which has direct implication for the dynamic operation of MSM-actuators. Detailed knowledge of this behavior is essential for motion control MSM actuators.
