Abstract:
MR/ER (magnetorheological/electrorheological) fluids are potential representatives of smart materials actuators. When subjected to external stimuli of sufficient magnitude they develop a yield stress. The phenomenon is fast and reversible, and it has made the material suitable for use in controllable semi-active or active actuators. Wellknown examples are vehicle dampers, powertrain mounts and rotary brakes. The potential technologies are still beyond conventional actuation systems. In the review paper the authors highlight recent advances in the technology. Finally, further application prospects are discussed and commented on.
