Abstract:
A novel measurement system has been developed to record surface Electromyography (sEMG) of muscles and their corresponding joint torques in real-time. In this article, we recorded sEMG of forearm muscles and their corresponding torques at the wrist joint. We then fit nonlinear quadratic functions to accurately predict the wrist joint torques from the sEMG of the forearm muscles. The acquisition of the sEMG and the estimation of the joint torques can be simultaneously performed in real-time, enabling a human subject to generate EMG signals to control the prosthesis. This was tested using a wrist modelled in musculoskeletal modelling software (MSMS) whose movement could be controlled by the EMG signals generated by a human subject in real-time. The measurement, estimation, and visualization system described here can facilitate the development of EMG-controlled man-machine prostheses for amputee patients.
