Abstract:
Idiopathic spinal disorders, such as scoliosis, are usually quantified from the X-ray films in sagittal and frontal plane. In this paper we consider analysis of the spinal deformity profile in adolescent patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with innovative and non-ionizing method. We performed a 3D optical scanning of 372 patients with a mild and severe AIS and analyzed internal and external indicators of the deformity based on the optical point clouds, emphasizing our attention towards indicators extracted from the two 2D projections of the 3D middle spinal line (MSL). This innovative approach will contribute to a better quantifying the degrees of the deformity curvatures, eliminating or reducing number of X-ray rehearsals and thus decreasing cumulative effect of harmful radiation to the exposed AIS patients.
