Comparison of normal occlusion arch forms between Uyghur and Han populations

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the mandibular dental and basal arch forms with normal occlusion in subjects of Uyghur and Han nationalities. The sample included 50 Uyghur subjects (23 males and 27 females) and 50 Han subjects (26 males and 24 females). Different points were set for canine and molar areas. The FA point (facial axis point) and the WALA ridge point (the band of keratinized soft tissue directly superior to the mucogingival junction) are the landmarkers of the dental arch and the base bone respectively. The distances between corre-sponding points of intercanine and intermolar widths were analyzed, and arch lengths were compared. The results suggest that the arch widths of Uyghur subjects were narrower than those of Han subjects. WALA points proved to be useful anatomic landmarks of the basal bone and could guarantee stable orthodontic results. FA points seem to be the most appropriate landmarks to represent the arch form.
