Recharging battery electric vehicles on time scales competitive to an average refueling stop of an internal combustion engine vehicle poses various unsolved challenges. Existing power grids face overload, in case the electrification of the transport sector picks up pace. This work compares measures for grid reinforcement with the use of lithium-ion based buffer storage under technical and economic aspects to meet the goal of future fast charge network at a power level of 400 kW and voltage levels of 800 V and above. Such extreme fast charging capabilities are not only demanded for future battery electric vehicles, but may also facilitate recharging of electric buses and electric trucks. Two different scenarios, namely a charging station at a motorway rest area and a charging station for an electric bus depot, are analyzed in more detail.
