Abstract:
One of the simplest and cheapest ways to produce microfluidic devices is based on the use of cut-out double-sided tape and plastic films [1]. These so-called “lab-on-a-foil” systems are restricted to simple assays due to the lack of easily actuated integrated microvalves [2]. Multiple-actuation wax microvalves are, for the first time, integrated into lab-on-a-foil systems. These optically-actuated valves are especially suited for the implementation of bead-based ELISA-like assays. The driving instrument used to manage fluids is based on a simple array of LEDs for valve actuation.
