Abstract:
A variant of the single phase – series resonant converter is proposed as a candidate for wind turbines connected to MVDC grids. The concept has the LC resonant tank located on the secondary side of the high turns-ratio transformer and operated with variable frequency and phase shift modulation. The new modulation strategy, entitled pulse removal technique, keeps the transformer flux constant from nominal frequency down to DC. To increase the technology readiness level, two medium voltage experimental setups have been assembled and their operation is described: a 10 kW, 500V to 5000V proof of concept converter and a soft-switching characterization setup with target 6.5kV devices.
