Abstract:
Due to the increasing demands for safe and efficient renewable energy systems, isolated DC-DC converters have become widely used as essential power conversion blocks. The advent of wide band gap semiconductors has the potential to significantly improve such converters from the perspective of size, efficiency and noise to make them viable building blocks for numerous applications including Rail Power Supplies, Photo Voltaic Generators and Solid State Transformers. This paper describes an isolated bi-directional full bridge DC-DC converter, operating ultra-sonically, utilising commercially available Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices. To verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, the converter was prototyped and tested experimentally for output powers up to 100 kW.
