Abstract:
This paper introduces a method for in-situ thermal impedance spectroscopy (ITIS) of power electronic modules in PWM converters. The method extracts the thermal-impedance frequency response function of power modules over a wide bandwidth in real-time without interrupting normal converter operation. The obtained thermal-impedance information allows identifying different degradation mechanisms of power modules, e.g. delamination of the power devices and the DCB as well as a deterioration of the convection process. Thus, this method serves as a sensor for remote state-of-health monitoring of power modules enabling predictive maintenance for safer and more reliable future converter systems.
