Abstract:
Recent advances in automotive powertrain technology have motivated the use of a dual 48 V/12 V bus in mild hybrid vehicles, which can provide an 8-15% fuel consumption reduction. The availability of a 48 V bus also enables support of heavier loads like air conditioning, faster heating of cabin, and faster, smoother starting with the use of 48 V Li-ion batteries. GaN transistors, with better figures of merit (FOM) for 48 V applications, can provide a reduction in size, weight and BOM cost. This paper will discuss a five-phase fully regulated bidirectional 48 V to 12 V DC-DC converter, built using GaN FETs with advanced thermal management that can provide 3 kW of power at an efficiency greater than 97.5%.
