Abstract:
Voltage harmonics on the AC terminals of machines can cause additional losses. For an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) with a high saliency ratio, the losses due to eddy currents were determined with FEMM. By using the ‘frozen permeability’ and the sliding air gap method, the armature losses were calculated. The losses due to current displacement from the rotor-field in the conductors were found to be small, almost negligible compared to conduction losses. The modulation harmonics were found to have a more substantial impact with 2.3% of the rated power.
