Abstract:
In this paper, the power losses of power stage were analyzed and calculated precisely in synchronous converter at light load. By comparing total power loss between Diode Emulation Mode (DEM) and Forced Continuous Conduction Mode (FCCM), the light load efficiency could be optimized with suitable operation mode. DEM helps in reducing conduction loss, switching loss and dead time loss of MOSFET. However in high frequency applications, power loss of output capacitor (Coss) is nonnegligible in DEM while FCCM is free of Coss loss since the charge-discharge current of Coss is part of inductor current. Therefore, DEM is not always superior to FCCM.
