Abstract:
Wood fibers have proven to be excellent fillers in green composites. As a component of green composites, the properties of wood fiber have noticeable effect on the performances of composites. In order to improve the properties of green composites, wood fiber usually needs to be modified before the use. The effect of surface modification on the thermal stability of arborvitae seed shell powder (ASSP) was studied in this paper. The ASSP was treated by using alkali (NaOH, KOH) following by silane (KH550, KH560). The thermogravimetric analysis was employed to obtain the thermal stability of modified ASSP and unmodified ASSP. The results showed that alkali treatment improved the thermal stability of ASSP. The effect of NaOH on thermal stability was greater than that of KOH. But there was no obvious difference for alkali/silane treated one.
