Abstract:
As the demand for electrochemical energy storage mechanisms and renewable energy systems constantly increasing, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) could not match the overwhelming demand as the single advanced rechargeable battery. Therefore, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), as a complementary technology to LIBs, have been rapidly developed since the last decade due to the tremendous natural abundance of sodium, which could significantly save the cost of manufacturing SIBs compared to that of LIBs. In this review, the electrochemical properties of anode, cathode, and electrolyte are explained. Several promising candidates for electrodes and electrolytes were introduced based on parameters such as energy density, electrochemical stability window, conductivity, and capacity retention.
