Abstract:
Thermal limits of overhead line conductors restrict the transmission capacities in electrical grids. Curative congestion management measures must properly consider thermal constraints to avoid damage to assets. This paper presents a simulation tool for the dynamic thermal behavior of overhead line conductors based on the IEEE 738-2012 standard. The tool obtains remaining response times (thermal reserves) during critical grid situations and calculates temporary admissible transmission loading limits. These are required to co-optimize preventive and curative congestion management measures, which allows for higher base loadings and reduced redispatch volumes.
