Abstract:
This paper examines the capacitive power loss caused by charging and discharging the transformer intrawinding capacitance. The power loss is measured on a hard-switched full-bridge forward converter with two transformers that differ only in their intrawinding capacitance. The difference in power loss between the transformers is compared to the estimated difference in capacitive loss, which is found to be small enough to confirm that the capacitive loss calculations are accurate. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that extending the dead-time states can reduce capacitive loss at low output power.
