Abstract:
A simple combination of a discrete boost power-factor correction controller with additional off-the-shelf components is presented which augments the basic control functions of a totem-pole PFC by providing the means to mitigate transient currents. Both common-mode and differential current spikes can occur with a totem-pole PFC at the zero crossings of the phase voltage. Typical boost PFC controllers, which otherwise provide the correct control features for a totem-pole topology, do not generally provide the means to limit these transients. The simple additions presented here address the lack without resorting to a programmable controller.
