Abstract:
This paper discusses a variety of design considerations on how to utilize the newly introduced 2.3 kV CoolSiC(TM) MOSFET XHP(TM) 2 power module fully in a high-power converter with two or more parallel modules per phase. After giving an overview on some application-specific requirements and how the XHP(TM) 2 module addresses them, a practical design of a wind converter power-stack demonstrator is described in detail. With a focus on high power density combined with an easy assembly, this fully operable converter system reaches a power rating of 3.5 MVA with just two power modules per phase. In the second design study, some practical considerations for paralleling the new power modules are examined.
