Abstract:
The introduction of new semiconductor devices based on SiC and GaN, or the latest generation of Si devices, results in higher switching speeds to reduce switching losses in power electronics converters. However, this exposes loads (e.g., traction motors) to higher dv/dt voltage waveforms and voltage peaks. This directly impacts motor insulation stress, bearing currents, and EMI. This paper presents an approach to motor terminal voltage simulations using the S-parameters of cables and motors through 3D simulations and characterization.
