Abstract:
When implementing LVDC microgrids, special attention must be paid to connectors to ensure the safety of the system and to protect operators from electric shock. Unlike AC networks, the arc in DC connectors, which occurs when disconnecting or connecting under load, is not self-extinguishing. Therefore, when transitioning to microgrids, it is important to closely examine and understand the safety concepts and solutions to maintain safety. Some existing solutions from today's AC systems can be utilized, while some safety concepts need to be rethought. This technical article describes the safety features of modern AC machines and how the current status for DC machines can be maintained and implemented. Furthermore, it draws a connection to standardization and provides an overview of standards from various application areas that are already addressing the topic. Finally, it presents solution approaches for the field of electromechanics in LVDC microgrids.
